Human-written content, however, especially when polished and formal, can sometimes be mistakenly flagged as AI-generated.
This paradox2 presents a new challenge for professionals, particularly in fields like technology leadership where clear, articulate communication is a baseline expectation for the nature of these roles. As a technology executive with over two decades of experience and an academic background in English, I've encountered an unexpected irony: my own writing is occasionally misclassified by AI detection tools as being AI-generated. This emerging challenge raises important questions about the future of written authenticity, professional ethics, communication standards, and writing in an AI-augmented world.
While this challenge is particularly acute in technology leadership, its implications extend far beyond our industry. From academia to publishing, and from legal to healthcare sectors, the utilization of AI in written communication is reshaping how we understand authenticity, integrity, and professional responsibility. This post will explore the specific challenges faced in tech leadership.
The Paradox of AI Detection
Current AI detectors employ a variety of heuristics to differentiate human writing from AI, checking for things like:
Excessive consistency in style and tone lacking in variation3. Humans tend to be more surprising (higher perplexity).
Overuse of clichés / limited word choice and vocabulary distribution4. People tend to vary their vocabulary and word choice depending on the context and tone (higher perplexity).

While AI can mimic writing styles exceptionally well, it can't replicate writing based on your unique experiences and perspectives (unless, of course, you have an enormous corpus of written content that a language model was trained on!). By infusing your communications with personal anecdotes, industry-specific insights, and your own brand of humor or wit., this manifest distinctiveness is hard for AI to replicate and harder still for AI detectors to erroneously flag14.

However, it may sacrifice the added efficiency and insights that AI tools can provide, possibly putting us at a disadvantage in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. Ironically, this approach may still leave our communications susceptible to being flagged as AI-generated, given the increasing sophistication of language models.
This isn't a quixotic battle of humans against AI, but a coevolution of human communication with technology of our own making. We can thoughtfully integrate AI tools into our workflows while maintaining our commitment to authentic expression while setting new standards for professional communication that is both artificially augmented yet fundamentally human. Or, we can draw a line in the sand and hope that it doesn't blur or vanish altogether.
